There are dozens, if not hundreds, of them and they all add to the mystery that surrounds IT. For example we have SATA, IDE, SQL, WWW, CODEC, SAS, SAN to name but a few; but the one I’m going to talk about today is NAS. NAS is an abbreviation, and it stands for Network Attached Storage.

There are more and more laptop and desktop PCs in the world and it’s becoming increasingly common for households to have more than one PC. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that in a lot of family homes there are often three, four or even more – “one each” as it were. With all these PCs living alongside each other you’d imagine a digital utopia where everyone could access the family photos and share school projects etc. but more often than not it’s the reverse. Everybody resorts to passing around USB memory sticks or burning files to CDs when all they need is a NAS.

OK, so what is a NAS? As I said earlier NAS stands for Network Attached Storage and is, in reality, a mini computer in its own right. Think of it as an intelligent hard drive for storing (and sharing) data across a network. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes but fundamentally they are smallish boxes with space for one or more hard drives. The idea is you add a NAS device to your home network, create a shared folder with the supplied software, and then all family members can save work to and from the NAS. At the very least it can act as a central location for backing up everyone’s photos, music and other work without the need to keep plugging in diff erent devices or burning CDs or DVDs.

Many NAS devices come with Media sharing facilities built in too, which allow for the streaming of music and video across the network, enabling everyone to share a music collection for example. Originally designed for businesses networks, to expand the available storage available, these quiet little boxes are also a great alternative for small businesses that don’t want the expense or complexity of a full blown server solution.

So next time you need a fi le that might be on your husband, wife, son, daughter’s computer consider a NAS so that all can share without the hassle.

by Steve Lee, Compumate

The IT world just loves its acronyms and abbreviations.
